Argentina Microalgae Researchers Make Advancements Towards Biodiesel Production

Written on March 17, 2010

Fis.com reports that researchers at the National Technological University at Mar del Plata in Argentina have been studying marine microalgae as a source of fuel. Researchers say that the goal of the project is to decrease consumption of energy to less than 20 percent of the energy that is produced, and point out that using microalgae for biodiesel is even more advantageous than using other forms of feedstock in that it does not take away from the food supply and no fresh water is utilized. One hectare of marine microalgae currently yields 8,000 liters of oil.
