Brazil expects 10% increase in sugar crops
Latin American Herald Tribune reports that Brazil will harvest 633.7 million tons of sugar this year, up 10.7% from 2008, the government announced. Brazil is also expected to produce unprecedented amounts of sugar-based ethanol, according to the Agriculture Ministry. The rise in sugar cane production is attributed to 9.9% increase in the cropland devoted to it to be able to supply 25 new sugar refineries and plants to produce ethanol.
