Brazil debt slavery connected to sugarcane ethanol, says report
Google News reports that debt slavery reached record numbers in Brazil last year, and most of the cases were connected to the nation’s sugarcane ethanol sector, says a report by a watchdog group. The report showed that 36% of those cases were linked to sugarcane production, which drives Brazil’s ethanol production. While the number of reported cases of debt slavery jumped, so did the number of people freed by government agents. Brazil’s association of sugar and ethanol producers declined to comment on the report.
