Latvia Gets Government Subsidies, Triples Biodiesel Production
The Baltic Course reports that biofuels production increased threefold in 2008 over 2007 production in the eastern European country of Latvia. Even though the output is still relatively small compared to more developed countries’ production, this shows an increase in global awareness and productivity of biofuels’ importance. The Latvian government began subsidizing their biodiesel market, following suit of some other countries around the world, which made this leap possible. Only about 10 percent of the biodiesel remains in Latvia, with the balance exported to other countries.
