Philippines to Export Sugar to U.S., Import Ethanol
Business Mirror reports that The Philippines is stepping up efforts to export an additional 65,000 metric tons (MT) of “A” sugar next year under the tariff-rate quota (TRQ) scheme of the U. S. government. This move comes as a result of indications that the U. S. could import an additional 500,000 MT of sugar. The Philippines already began this initiative in September 2008 to meet demand and help stabilize the local price of sugar. Conversely, the Philippines would import 184 million liters of ethanol next year because only two bioethanol plants will become operational in the country in 2009 with a combined capacity of 39 million liters per year.
